"'Wayward Pines,” a surprise hit last year, had a spooky, “Twilight Zone”-esque plot, an appealing star in the amazingly well-preserved Matt Dillon and the gorgeous Carla Gugino. All of these elements combined to keep the M. Night Shyamalan series humming during the summer doldrums. A second-season seemed like a good idea. But, like Showtime’s “The Affair,” “Wayward” — based on the novels by Blake Crouch — was meant to be one-season show. The new season, premiering Wednesday night on Fox, is just plain silly.
